The Jemez Valley
UNDERSTANDING PTSD: Sunday, February 17th 4:00-5:30pm
COMPLEX PTSD IN VETS: Sunday, March 17th, 4:00 – 5:30 p.m
The Jemez Valley, NM is close to the creator of SSI, Courtney Lewis’s heart because she was raised there. The beautiful landscape and diverse culture of the valley makes her proud to have called it her home. The people in the Jemez gave so much to her while she was growing up and now, through Small Steps International, she has a chance to give back.
Currently, Courtney is counseling families, adults and children at the Jemez Springs Presbyterian Church and has been doing so since June of 2011. Small Steps International will begin by raising grants to provide Infant Mental Health intervention and community education to the Jemez Valley. Ideally, SSI would like to extend its work throughout the valley through the aid of clinical mental health contractors and Infant Mental Health Endorsed personnel. Psycho-educational seminars will begin February 2013 through a three-part series on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The seminars will be held at the Jemez Springs Presbyterian Church and will provide education about how PTSD affects the brain, PTSD in war veterans and PTSD in children. More psycho-educational seminars to be held in the Jemez Valley will be posted on this website and promoted throughout the entire community.
At the grassroots stage, SSI will be investigating how we can effectively reach the families in the Jemez Valley that can not afford the trip into Albuquerque to get mental health help and how we can develop funding to create a larger contacted workforce to attend to the Jemez Valley’s mental health needs. We’ll also be researching how we can educate the community about relevant and local mental health issues.
