First Post

Hi everyone,

This is the first day I have had a chance to write about our experiences here in Port-au-Prince.  The first day we arrived we set up the plan regarding having to balance preschool starting at Maranatha Children Home Garden of Development and finding the time to train their teachers and the caretakers (nannies) at the orphanage.  It has turned out to be a challenge but we are making it work!  It would not have been an issue if the President of Haiti had decided not to change the beginning of school at the last minute to this week!  Anyway, I have held two days of classes about brain development from Zero – Three, attachment and self-regulation, and focused on practical skill teaching that they can do with the children through calming touch.

All of the work this week is to piece by piece communicate the importance of the nannies working on attachment with the children in their care and help them with emotional and physical regulation.  We have come prepared with techniques to pass on to the nannies that we were taught by an occupational therapist, developmental specialist and what I have learned in clinical mental health trainings.

If you are curious about what I mean about attachment and self regulation please look at this link: http://www.zerotothree.org/public-policy/webinars-conference-calls/impact-of-maltreatment-on-early-childhood-development.pdf

Thank you all for your support!  I have attached a video of the precious children whose development we are trying to support!
